TRANSFORMATIONS & INTERPRETATIONS

“Anyone can eventually take a good picture. The transformation is where the art begins.”

Al Hooks begins with places he knows: working harbors, weathered piers, old highways and the architecture of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.

Then comes the transformation—an instinctive shift in color, contrast and atmosphere that moves the image away from documentation and into memory. Before Katrina, Al also created commissioned portraits of Coast homes. The houses—and those original works—are now gone, but their spirit remains part of this work.
